Macbeth Lessons 11-12 Act II Scene II-Act III Scene I


Lesson 11 has become a transition into his self studying; though he still depended on my translations he’s begun to read the different parts on his own.
Covering Act II Scenes II-III, you’ll hear less of me this time
Lesson 12 is what I’d like to call tough love. We’re hitting the books, and he’s got his Cambridge issue where there’re photos, guiding vocabulary but no translations given. I’m happy to say he’s progressed where he can (mostly) understand Shakespeare’s language. Mostly.
(As usual the Macbeth portion of the lessons don’t last for two hours because I still have to cover different aspects of learning English πŸ˜”)

I'll be the first to admit, even to my students, really picking out signposts is quite hard to understand without an example or two in actual books and films to relate to

And mind you I wasn't taught this in school either. My brain does me proud.

Haroun and the Sea of Stories lesson 1



I mentioned in my previous blog post of how I was suddenly thrust into reading this story to teach

So in a couple of days I've had to get the analyses and themes ready for class. It's even harder because the book can't be found in local bookstores (Gee, aren't we a literate state...)

With all lessons, I still feel it's my duty to explain more about literature than simply talking incessantly about one book, I say this with some prejudices, since my student really doesn't like it (it's evident in the recording, just wait a few minutes and her griping starts)

Ergo, I planned on starting the lesson by explaining "storytelling", which is essentially what the book is about. It's all one neat cycle. Anyway, that meant looking at what the Hero's Journey is. I did research on archetypal characters but the look on my student's face told me I couldn't go on to that.

As I repeated over and over, which you will hear, it's hard to teach a book if you don't like it πŸ˜–

Also, I'll be reviewing the book soon. Watch out for that. Still deciding on what to write πŸ™‚πŸ™ƒπŸ™‚πŸ™ƒ

So we're going to tackle this book by summarising each section of a chapter, along with analysing that, themes, even inferring the characters' traits

If it were done when 'tis done, then 'twere well
It were done quickly: if the assassination
Could trammel up the consequence, and catch
With his surcease success; that but this blow
Might be the be-all and the end-all here,
But here, upon this bank and shoal of time,
We'ld jump the life to come. But in these cases
We still have judgment here; that we but teach
Bloody instructions, which, being taught, return
To plague the inventor: this even-handed justice
Commends the ingredients of our poison'd chalice
To our own lips. He's here in double trust;
First, as I am his kinsman and his subject,
Strong both against the deed; then, as his host,
Who should against his murderer shut the door,

Enter LADY MACBETH, reading a letter
LADY MACBETH
'They met me in the day of success: and I have
learned by the perfectest report, they have more in
them than mortal knowledge. When I burned in desire
to question them further, they made themselves air,
into which they vanished. Whiles I stood rapt in
the wonder of it, came missives from the king, who
all-hailed me 'Thane of Cawdor;' by which title,
before, these weird sisters saluted me, and referred
me to the coming on of time, with 'Hail, king that
shalt be!' This have I thought good to deliver
thee, my dearest partner of greatness, that thou
mightst not lose the dues of rejoicing, by being
ignorant of what greatness is promised thee. Lay it
to thy heart, and farewell.'
Glamis thou art, and Cawdor; and shalt be
What thou art promised: yet do I fear thy nature;
It is too full o' the milk of human kindness

Macbeth Lesson plan update: The rest of Act I Scene III

As I had a late lunch, a plan began to brew. To speed things up, any translation I deem either too difficult or too minor will be given by me to my student. Plus some notes.

I still want to explain in class but I will leave gaps in translation for him to figure out.

He's gotta try to understand Shakespeare's English sooner rather than later.

And I foresaw this taking up a lot of time (and it's so pivotal in the play), which is the beauty of ~ homework ~

 

This is the rest of scene 3. Very important turning point for somebody.

_________________, but he’s been sentenced to death, and _______________. I don’t know whether he fought on Norway’s side, or if he secretly aided the rebels, or if he fought with both of our enemies. But his treason, which has been proven, and to which he’s confessed, means he’s finished.

MACBETH

(to himself) It’s just like they said—now I’m the thane of Glamis and the thane of Cawdor. And the best part of what they predicted is still to come. (to ROSS and ANGUS) __________________ (speaking so that only BANQUO can hear) ____________________

BANQUO

__________________ you might be on your way to becoming king, as well as thane of Cawdor. _________________. The agents of evil often tell us _________ in order to lead us to our destruction. They earn our _________________, but then they betray us when it will damage us the most. (to ROSS andANGUS) Gentlemen, I’d like to have a word with you, please.

ROSS, ANGUS, AND BANQUOMOVE TO ONE SIDE.
MACBETH

(to himself) So far the witches ___________________
(to ROSS and ANGUS)Thank you, gentlemen.

(to himself) This supernatural temptation doesn’t seem like ____________________ If it’s a bad thing, why was I promised a promotion that turned out to be true? Now I’m the thane of Cawdor, just like they said I would be.

But if this is a good thing, why do I find myself thinking about murdering King Duncan, ___________________? The dangers that actually threaten me here and now frighten me less than the horrible things I’m imagining. Even though it’s just a fantasy so far, the mere thought of ____________________. My ability to act is stifled by my thoughts and speculations, and the only things that matter to me are things that don’t really exist.

BANQUO

Look at Macbeth—he’s ____________________

MACBETH

(to himself)______________, perhaps fate will just make it happen and I won’t have to do anything.

BANQUO

Macbeth is not used to his new titles. They’re like new clothes: they don’t fit until you break them in over time.

MACBETH

(to himself) One way or another,_____________.

BANQUO

Good Macbeth, we’re ready when you are.

MACBETH

I beg your pardon; __________________. Kind gentlemen, I won’t forget the trouble you’ve taken for me whenever I think of this day. Let’s go to the king.

A drum, a drum!
Macbeth doth come.

ALL
The weird sisters, hand in hand,
Posters of the sea and land,

BANQUO

Macbeth Lesson 3 Act I Scene II-III

From Fife, great king;
Where the Norweyan banners flout the sky
And fan our people cold. Norway himself,
With terrible numbers,
Assisted by that most disloyal traitor
The thane of Cawdor, began a dismal conflict;
Till that Bellona's bridegroom, lapp'd in proof,
Confronted him with self-comparisons,
Point against point rebellious, arm 'gainst arm.
Curbing his lavish spirit: and, to conclude,
The victory fell on us.

DUNCAN
Great happiness!

ROSS
That now
Sweno, the Norways' king, craves composition:
Nor would we deign him burial of his men
Till he disbursed at Saint Colme's inch
Ten thousand dollars to our general use.

DUNCAN
No more that thane of Cawdor shall deceive
Our bosom interest: go pronounce his present death,
And with his former title greet Macbeth.

Sergeant
Doubtful it stood;
As two spent swimmers, that do cling together
And choke their art. The merciless Macdonwald--

Thunder and lightning. Enter three Witches

First Witch
When shall we three meet again
In thunder, lightning, or in rain?

Second Witch
When the hurlyburly's done,
When the battle's lost and won.

Third Witch
That will be ere the set of sun.

First Witch
Where the place?

Second Witch
Upon the heath.

Third Witch
There to meet with Macbeth.

First Witch
I come, Graymalkin!

Second Witch
Paddock calls.

Third Witch
Anon.

ALL
Fair is foul, and foul is fair:
Hover through the fog and filthy air.

SCENE II. A camp near Forres.


Alarum within. Enter DUNCAN, MALCOLM, DONALBAIN, LENNOX, with Attendants, meeting a bleeding Sergeant

DUNCAN
What bloody man is that? He can report,
As seemeth by his plight, of the revolt
The newest state.

MALCOLM
This is the sergeant
Who like a good and hardy soldier fought
'Gainst my captivity. Hail, brave friend!
Say to the king the knowledge of the broil
As thou didst leave it.

Though this would be my second time teaching the spectacular tale that is Animal Farm, it still hasn't dulled the enormity that it took to come up with such a masterpiece. I can see why adults in their 40s-50s I know who studied this in their teens and still remember it

Bargaining with the Birds

This would be my go at the literature pilot reading programme.

In about a week we would have gone to four schools to hopefully interest them in Lit. Today I'm dealing with solely Sec 2 students

I love my timeline pieces. Seeing them reconstruct, like how I did before, was so amusing

My precious ballot box to house a truly brilliant sentiment of a voting slip

It was wonderful teaching them what it means to spoil the vote. They really got into it

My voice closed the session. I wanted them to think about the consequences of voting purely on hearing the candidate's articulate speech. How much can you trust?

Of course when it came down to it... I think they (the majority who kindly voted for him) really felt the weight of voting once I told them: Robert lied. (Noted from 'lessons learnt' in the feedback form)
